PPG highlights battery coating innovations at China International Battery Fair

SHENZEN, China, May 30, 2018 – PPG (NYSE:PPG) recently announced that it showcased its growing portfolio of battery coatings for battery electric and hybrid electric vehicles during the China International Battery Fair (CIBF), May 22-24, 2018, at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center in Shenzhen, China. CIBF is one of the world’s largest expositions for the battery and energy storage markets, comprising 4,500 booths from more than 1,500 exhibitors.

PPG (Booth 5B181) showcased its new coating technologies for lithium-ion batteries and battery modules and packs used in automotive, industrial, and consumer electronic applications. These include:

  • PPG IOCRON™ cathode binder – This cost-effective new binder eliminates harmful N-Methylpyrrolidone (NMP) in the traditional cathode coating process while maintaining battery performance. PPG Iocron binder also helps streamline formulation and application processes, reducing mixing times by up to 90 percent. PPG also is developing anode materials that can store more energy than conventional lithium-ion battery materials.

  • Battery module and pack coatings – PPG offers a range of advanced coatings formulated to prevent corrosion, offer passive fire protection and deliver other important benefits while complementing virtually any thermal management approach. These solutions span multiple pack configurations and enclosure materials.

“We are pleased to bring our latest battery coatings innovations to this important industry event,” said Ranju Arya, PPG senior business director, mobility. “PPG is helping to transform the mobility marketplace through the development of innovative coatings and related technologies that help battery manufacturers and vehicle OEMs increase the range and performance of electric powertrains.”
